Power factor is the ratio of real power (kW) to apparent power (kVA) in an electrical system. Motors@Work uses power factor measurements in its load and efficiency analytics.

Some measurement systems display power factor either as a percentage (0 – 100%) or as a decimal (0 – 1.00); please enter your power factor measurement in Motors@Work as a percentage (i.e., enter 84.13 if your system shows 84.13% or 0.8413).

Motors@Work generates alerts for low power factor conditions. You can adjust the threshold and number of consecutive readings required before receiving an alert in the Setup Wizard under Settings. Specify the percentage (i.e., enter 95 to receive alerts if power factor falls below 95% or 0.95) below which Motors@Work should send alerts in the Power Factor Alert Threshold field. The default threshold of 95% corresponds with NEMA’s recommendation. To avoid receiving alerts from low-power-factor conditions during motor startup, you can adjust the number of measurements required before Motors@Work generates a low-power-factor alert in the Consecutive Low Power Factor Trigger field. The default value of 1 will create an alert each time power factor falls below the value in the Power Factor Alert Threshold.
